ChatGPT Ads adds a visual format: what the test means for brands

OpenAI says it will test visual ads during ChatGPT image generation in the United States later this month. New measurement integrations are also announced, but the format is not a worldwide launch.

A visual format, with a geographically limited test

OpenAI’s October 5 announcement introduces a visual ad format intended to show products or services through imagery. The first test is planned during image generation in ChatGPT for users on Free and Go plans. OpenAI says testing will begin later in October in the United States with an initial group of advertisers. That is a planned test, not evidence of general availability in other countries or across all ChatGPT users.

The company says ads will be clearly labelled and kept separate from the image being created. It also reiterates that advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers. These are product design commitments described by OpenAI; brands evaluating the channel should follow the live policies and test conditions rather than assume the format works like a standard display placement.

What changes for creative and product discovery

An image-led placement can give advertisers more room to show a product context than a text-only unit. That may be useful for categories where appearance, use or inspiration matters. But the setting is unusual: a person may be describing an image they want to make, not browsing a conventional shopping page. Creative needs to fit the task and should not interrupt or masquerade as the generated result.

For e-commerce and brand teams, this raises practical questions about feed quality, product images, landing pages and how an ad’s context is explained. A visual unit is not automatically more persuasive. The product promise, image rights, availability, price and destination still need to match, and campaign reporting should separate impressions and clicks from outcomes that can be attributed with confidence.

Measurement partnerships are expanding

OpenAI also announced integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp for sending conversion data from existing systems. It named attribution partners for web and app measurement, and said it is exploring geo-based incrementality experiments with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic. Those partnerships extend measurement options; they do not mean every advertiser has a complete causal measurement system available immediately.

The announcement includes early partner-reported results. They are vendor-provided examples, not independent benchmarks and not a forecast for other campaigns. Advertisers should establish a baseline, define conversion events and decide how consent, attribution windows and duplicate conversions are handled. If the test budget is small, the results may not support fine-grained conclusions even when dashboards show precise numbers.

What brands should verify before planning

First confirm the actual eligibility, geography, plan, creative format and dates offered to the account. The initial visual test is described for the United States later in October, so an EU business should not build a launch plan on the assumption that it can buy the placement now. OpenAI says advertisers can register, but registration does not imply that the new visual test is available to every applicant.

Next define what success would mean compared with existing channels: qualified visits, incremental sales, product discovery or another outcome. Keep creative claims truthful, provide a relevant landing experience and check how the ad is labelled. Marketing teams should also review OpenAI’s current ad policies and data-handling documentation before connecting conversion sources.

A channel to assess, not a guaranteed shortcut

The announcement points to a broader experiment in conversational advertising: an ad may appear alongside a task that involves exploring options or producing an image. Whether that creates durable value depends on user fit, placement controls, creative quality and measurement. The format remains in testing, and performance claims in launch materials should be treated as examples with their stated source and context.

For now, brands can prepare by improving product information, identifying a measurable test and reviewing privacy and attribution requirements. They should avoid shifting budget or promising reach based solely on the announcement. As availability expands, actual campaign terms and independent results will matter more than the novelty of appearing inside a chat interface.
